A quick reference for the terms and mechanics you’ll run into across Pokémon Odyssey — what they mean, and where to read more.

Core Mechanics

The systems that make Pokémon Odyssey play differently from the original games.

Strata & The Labyrinth

Pokémon Odyssey swaps Gym Badges for eight strata inside the Yggdrasil Labyrinth. Each stratum has its own level cap and a Stratum Captain to beat.

F.O.E.s

Field On Encounters — tough, often avoidable enemies that guard parts of the Labyrinth. They hit much harder than a normal wild Pokémon.

Double Battles

Double Battles are the default format whenever you have more than one healthy Pokémon, so team building leans on partner synergy more than a normal playthrough.

Etrian Variants

Original regional forms unique to Pokémon Odyssey, inspired by the Etrian Odyssey series. Look them up alongside every other Pokémon in the Pokédex.

EVs & IVs

Every Pokémon you catch or receive starts with perfect 31 IVs. EVs come from Power Items and Vitamins instead of grinding wild battles.

Naval Exploration

Later strata add boat-based exploration and naval routes alongside the usual dungeon-crawling through the Labyrinth.

Difficulty Modes

Choose Easy, Normal, or Hard from your very first town, and change how level caps and boss battles play out for the rest of your run.

Link Stone

An evolution item that replaces trading for Pokémon like Haunter, Kadabra, Machoke, and Graveler — use it straight from your Bag.

Story & Setting

You play as Nyx, a new recruit of the Talrega Guild on Talrega Island, exploring the Yggdrasil Labyrinth alongside your sister Aimée and fellow guild members Ethan and Olympia. Instead of Gym Leaders and the Elite Four, Odyssey is built around guild-based exploration: mining and gathering points, shop upgrades, and dangerous F.O.E.s guarding the Labyrinth’s depths.

Which Pokémon generations are included?

Pokémon from Generations 1 through 3, including cross-gen evolutions and original Etrian Variant regional forms unique to Odyssey.

What’s the difference between an F.O.E. and a normal wild Pokémon?

F.O.E.s are stronger, often avoidable encounters that guard specific parts of the Labyrinth — they’re built to be tougher than a random wild battle.
