What Is Pokémon Odyssey II: Heroes of Lemuria?

Pokémon Odyssey II continues the gameplay philosophy established by its predecessor: combining the battle systems of Pokémon with the dungeon exploration and class mechanics inspired by the Etrian Odyssey franchise. Led by creator PacoScarso alongside contributors Mediko, Lodestar195, Hornatrix and Avon, the project introduces a new setting, new party combinations and a fresh narrative arc.

Rather than following a traditional eight-gym journey, the story centers around the kingdom of Lemuria and the World Tree Yggdrasil. Adventurers and trainers gather to compete in the Great Lemurian Race, navigating multi-floor labyrinths filled with environmental puzzles, wandering dangers and challenging trainer encounters.

Is It Necessary to Play the Original Pokémon Odyssey First?

The developer has stated that Heroes of Lemuria can be enjoyed on its own. While it is set in the same world and contains lore ties to the events of Pokémon Odyssey, the story, cast and central objective are self-contained within Lemuria.

Players familiar with the first game will recognize the Etrian Odyssey-inspired difficulty, dungeon mapping aesthetic and battle pacing, but newcomers can start directly with Demo 1 without missing essential plot mechanics.

How Does Pokémon Odyssey II Play?

Heroes of Lemuria does not simply follow standard mainline Pokémon conventions. Its gameplay mechanics are tuned specifically for tactical team planning, survival-style exploration and resource management.

Double Battles

Battles throughout Lemuria heavily emphasize Double Battle formats. Turn-to-turn strategy focuses on team synergy, field control and complementary movepools rather than sweepers relying on pure speed.

Eight Subclasses

The game includes eight subclasses that shape the player’s team building for battles:

  • Landsknecht: Frontline offensive physical combat specialist.
  • Survivalist: Agile explorer with utility, speed and escape abilities.
  • Protector: Defensive anchor providing team shielding and damage mitigation.
  • Dark Hunter: Status inflictor specializing in binds and debilitating ailments.
  • Medic: Dedicated healer supporting team sustained recovery.
  • Alchemist: Elemental magic striker targeting weaknesses with special attacks.
  • Hexer: Curse manipulator controlling enemy stats and momentum.
  • Gunner: Long-range physical and elemental sharpshooter.

Class-related starting items are not permanently exclusive; they can also be obtained later during normal progression.

Mining and Gathering

Mining and gathering points are part of the game’s resource and crafting loop. Players collect materials and items during labyrinth exploration, which can be used to fund upgrades and equipment throughout the adventure.

F.O.E. Encounters and Sidequests

Heroes of Lemuria includes F.O.E.s, a familiar feature from Etrian Odyssey. These are powerful mini-bosses that appear as visible overworld sprites in dungeons rather than random encounters. Players must navigate around them when underleveled or challenge them when prepared. The demo also includes a quest system providing optional objectives alongside main progression.

Pokémon Training and Battle Customization

The developer’s feature summary highlights multiple quality-of-life adjustments for team building. Nature changes are supported, and Pokémon obtained through the trade system are reported to feature perfect 31 IVs.

The Aether Type

Pokémon Odyssey II uses a 19-type system that includes the custom Aether type. This type was introduced in the original Pokémon Odyssey and continues in the sequel, altering matchups for both offensive and defensive strategy.
