The EV-Editor: How to Get It & What It Does
A sidequest reward that lets you set your Pokémon’s EVs directly — no grinding, no Vitamins, no battling the same Pokémon over and over. Here’s exactly how to unlock it.
What Is the EV-Editor?
The EV-Editor is a key item added by creator PacoScarso to cut out the grind of normal EV training. Once you have it, you can set or reset a Pokémon’s EVs whenever you want, instead of relying on wild battles, Vitamins, or Power Items.
It’s a built-in Pokémon Odyssey mechanic, not an emulator cheat, GameShark code, or save-editing program — a normal part of the game, earned through a sidequest.
Say a Pokémon started out built for speed and offense. If it later ends up filling a defensive role instead, the EV-Editor lets you shift those points into HP and defenses without starting its training over.
What Are EVs?
EVs (Effort Values) are training points that raise a Pokémon’s battle stats. They don’t touch its species, type, moves, or ability — just how it performs in a fight.
- Attack EVs hit harder with physical moves.
- Special Attack EVs hit harder with special moves.
- Speed EVs help a Pokémon move before the opponent.
- HP, Defense, and Special Defense EVs help it survive longer.
EVs work best when they match a Pokémon’s actual job. A fast attacker and a defensive support Pokémon shouldn’t be built the same way.
How to Get the EV-Editor
The EV-Editor comes from a sidequest called “Your Compendium…”, given by a Scientist at the Pokémon Lab in Coastal Road.
- Travel to Coastal Road and find the Pokémon Lab.
- Talk to the Scientist inside to pick up the sidequest.
- Catch 40 different Pokémon — your Compendium (Pokédex) needs 40 entries caught, not just seen.
- Return to the Scientist and show them your Compendium.
- You’ll receive the EV-Editor as your reward.
40 catches sounds like a lot early on, but between story encounters and a bit of exploring, most players reach it naturally within the first few strata.
How to Use the EV-Editor
Open your Bag, go to Key Items, and select the EV-Editor. Before touching any stats, check the Pokémon’s nature, ability, types, and moves — that’s what tells you whether it should hit hard, move first, or tank hits.
- Choose a Pokémon from the EV-Editor menu.
- Decide its main role on your team.
- Put EVs into the stats that support that role.
- Check its updated stats.
- Save once you’re happy with the spread.
A focused spread beats spreading points evenly across every stat.
EV Spreads by Team Role
Starting points, not fixed rules — the right spread still depends on the Pokémon, its moves, the level cap, and its partner in Double Battles.
| Team Role | EV Focus | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Physical attacker | Attack & Speed | More damage, and moves earlier |
| Special attacker | Sp. Attack & Speed | More special damage, better turn order |
| Bulky physical wall | HP & Defense | Absorbs physical hits for the team |
| Bulky special wall | HP & Sp. Defense | Survives special attacks |
| Fast support | Speed & HP | Gets support moves off early, with some durability |
| Slow heavy attacker | HP & Attack/Sp. Attack | More damage and survival, skips wasted Speed |
| Flexible partner | HP & main attacking stat | Balance of staying power and damage |
A naturally slow Pokémon often gets more out of HP or defenses than a full Speed investment — and a naturally fast one may already be quick enough to spend points on power or bulk instead.
EVs aren’t unlimited, either: each Pokémon has 510 points total to spread across its stats, 252 max in any one stat, and points only count in chunks of 4 — which is why a clear role matters more than trying to max out every stat.
Why It’s Worth Getting Early
Double Battles and F.O.E. fights punish an unfocused team, and EVs are a big part of making a Pokémon actually hit its role — a bulky wall, a fast sweeper, a special tank. Getting the EV-Editor early means you can build your team’s stats correctly from the start, instead of realizing halfway through the Labyrinth that your starter’s spread is wrong.
It also means you can freely reassign EVs later if a Pokémon’s role changes — something the original games never let you do without a rare Berry.
Planning EVs for Double Battles
EVs should help your two Pokémon work together, not just win one-on-one. Before a tough fight, ask:
- Which Pokémon needs to act first?
- Which partner is likely to take the most damage?
- Can both Pokémon threaten the same dangerous enemy?
- Does one of them need more bulk to survive a key hit?
- Is your team covering both physical and special damage?
If a build doesn’t work out, the EV-Editor lets you adjust it and try again — nothing is locked in.
EV-Editor Tips
- Use it on Pokémon you plan to keep around for several strata.
- Build out your whole team’s roles instead of perfecting one attacker.
- Match EVs to moves — physical moves need Attack, special moves need Special Attack.
- Think about a Pokémon’s Double Battle partner before locking in Speed or defensive EVs.
- Reassign EVs whenever a Pokémon’s role changes later on.
- EVs are separate from level gains, evolution, IVs, and Nature — changing one doesn’t change the others.
EV-Editor Problems
Can’t find the EV-Editor
Reach Coastal Road first, catch at least 40 different Pokémon, then talk to the Scientist at the Pokémon Lab. It won’t appear before the sidequest is done.
40 Pokémon caught, but no reward
Make sure your Compendium counts caught species, not just seen ones. Catch one or two more and talk to the Scientist again.
It’s missing from my Bag
Check the Key Items pocket. If it’s still not there, reload your save and talk to the Scientist again before saving over your main file.
My Pokémon’s stats barely changed
Changes can look small at low levels — compare stats after a level up, and make sure the EVs match a stat the Pokémon’s moves actually use.
EV-Editor FAQ
What is the EV-Editor?
A Pokémon Odyssey key item that lets you set and reassign a Pokémon’s EVs directly, without training through battles, Vitamins, or Power Items.
Is the EV-Editor a cheat?
No. It’s a built-in game feature, not an emulator cheat, GameShark code, or save editor.
How do I unlock the EV-Editor?
Reach Coastal Road, catch 40 different Pokémon, then show your Compendium to the Scientist at the Pokémon Lab.
Do seen Pokémon count toward the 40, or only caught ones?
Caught. The sidequest asks you to show your Compendium after catching 40 different Pokémon, not just encountering them.
Can I still use Vitamins and Power Items instead?
Yes. The EV-Editor is an option, not a requirement — Vitamins and Power Items still work the normal way if you’d rather train EVs that way.
Can I reassign EVs after I’ve already set them?
Yes, as many times as you like. It’s a key item you keep, so you can reopen it and rebuild a Pokémon’s spread whenever its role changes.
What EVs should a physical attacker use?
Attack and Speed cover most physical attackers. A slower attacker often gets more out of Attack and HP instead.
What’s a good EV spread to start with?
The usual Gen 3 rule still applies: 510 points total, 252 max per stat, and EVs only help in chunks of 4. A common baseline is 252 in your main attacking stat, 252 in Speed or a bulk stat, and 4 elsewhere.
Keep Building Your Team
Whether you need a quicker attacker, a harder-hitting special Pokémon, or a tougher Double Battle partner, the EV-Editor lets you change plans without retraining from scratch. Browse the Pokédex, check Level Caps to see how difficulty scales, or head to the Docs hub for every other mechanic.
